Musicians Performing at the Fall 2017 Concert

Guest soloists: Kathryn Thomas Umble, flute, Marissa Knaub Avon, harp, and Strings of Joy students

Kathryn Thomas Umble, flute

    Kathryn Thomas Umble has presented recitals in Europe and throughout the United States, including venues such as Alice Tully Hall, New York, and the Milhaud Society at the Cleveland Institute of Music with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Reviewers have commented on her "excellent sense of shaping melodic lines" and her "immaculate and moving" performances.

    She was featured guest artist of the Pittsburgh Flute Club, concerto soloist with Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, guest artist in recital with the Aurista Ensemble in New York City, winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Auditions Competition. and has performed in recital at many National Flute Association conventions including in Las Vegas, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Chicago. Dr. Umble is a founding member of Duo Allant, a flute and guitar ensemble. She can be heard on the Naxos, Dana, GMMC and Access Recording labels.

    Kathryn Thomas Umble is an Associate Professor of Flute at the Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University. In addition to performing principal flute with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, she holds the piccolo position with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and has performed principal flute with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

    She has also served as a National Flute Association competition judge and the flute pedagogy panel member. She conducted the Dana Flute Ensemble in a full concert performance at the 2005 Ohio Music Educators Association conference and the 2006 and 2009 National Flute conventions in Pittsburgh and New York City.

    Kathryn Thomas Umble was awarded the Prix d'Excellence for Outstanding Musicianship from the Fountainbleau School of Music, France. She has served on the faculties of Bowling Green State University and Grove City College and holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University and Michigan State University.

 Marissa Knaub Avon, harp

    Marissa Knaub Avon is a frequent soloist and orchestra members throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. She performs for more than 50 events each year such as weddings, receptions, corporate parties, church services, solo recitals, orchestra and chamber concerts. Her solo harp compact disc, Worship From the Harp, is now available.

    Marissa performs regularly with the Resonance Works, Edgewood Symphony Orchestra, Alia Musica, Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and Wheeling Symphony; she will be a featured soloist with Resonance Works performing Debussy's Danse sacree et danse profane in December 2017. She performed The Fantasticks with the Pittsburgh Public Theater in October 2016. Marissa teaches harp at Youngstown State University, CAPA 6-12, Pittsburgh Youth Concert Orchestra and maintains a private harp teaching studio for students of all ages.

    Marissa completed the Performance Studies program at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Yolanda Kondonassis. She holds a Master of Music from Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University where she studies with Jeanne Chalifoux. She received her Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, where her studies included jazz harp under the tutelage of Felice Pomeranz. She spent many summers at the Salzedo Harp Colony in Camden, Maine, studying with the legendary harp teacher Alice Chalifoux. She began the harp at age 10 with Lucy Scandrett.

    Marissa was a special guest performer at the American Harp Society Conference in New York City. She was the principal harpist of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra in Sandusky. She held harp teaching positions with the Urban Youth Harp Ensemble in Atlanta, at Toccoa Falls College and Young Artists' Harp Seminar. Marissa gave solo harp recitals for the John Hopkins University Alumni Association and performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Lancaster Symphony Orchestra and other major surrounding area orchestras. In Atlanta, she played with many ensembles and orchestras including the Macon Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, New Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra and Ludwig Symphony Orchestra. Marissa won a resident artist fellowship at the Atlantic Music Festival. She has also played with the Chamber Music International in London, England, and with the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific in British Columbia. Other notable experiences include performing as jazz harpist with Charlie Haden and Michael Brecker at Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as with Ray Charles in Washington, D.C. She also performed at the White House and toured Europe as principal harpist with the West Virginia Ovations Orchestra.
