Musicians Performing at the Spring 2018 Concert

Stories and Surprises!
April 22, 2018
Susan Davenny Wyner, Music Director/Conductor

Guest soloist: Kisma Jordan, soprano
PictureKisma Jordan, Soprano
Kisma Jordan, Soprano

Characterized by The New York Times as a "shimmering soprano voice," accomplished soprano Kisma Jordan is a voice of immense versatility, highlighted by performances of art song, opera and concert works. In the 2017-2018 season, Kisma will make appearances with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Warren Philharmonic and Wisconsin Philharmonic, after her debut at the Savannah VOICE Festival in the fall as the recipient of the Sherrill Milnes American Opera Award in the 2017 American Traditions Competition.

Invested in pushing the conventions of classical voice through an integration of operatic and soulful sounds, Kisma presented her original fusion project, OperaSoul, at TEDxDetroit at the start of the 2016-2017 season, followed by concert appearances with Flint Symphony Orchestra and a return to Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.

Recent seasons have brought Kisma to the opera stage in appearances with Opera Western Reserve (as Micaela in Carmen), Annapolis Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago in Porgy and Bess (Clara), and the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric in The Rake's Progress (Anne Trulove), of which The Baltimore Sun praised excitedly, "Kisma Jordan steals the show, vocally, with her truly lovely soprano. She sounds wonderful in the house, the tone ripe and well-supported, the phrasing lively, the diction superb. I con't prove any great powers of prognostication, but I sure do feel there's a good chance we could all be hearing more from this singer in time."

The Detroit, Michigan, native was named a 2014 Kresge Artist Fellow by the Kresge Foundation consisting of a monetary prize and professional practice opportunities, which rewards metropolitan Detroit artists for their exceptional commitment to artistic achievement and strong contributions to their respective communities.

Recent honors for Kisma include the Bronze Award in the 2017 American Traditions Competition. She was a top prize winner in the Soma International Foundation's 2016 Lois Alba Aria Competition, and she captured first prize in both Opera Theater of Pittsburgh's 2016 Mildred Miller International Vocal Competition and the National Opera Association's 2016 Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento vocal Competition. Among other awards are the Harold Haugh Light Opera Vocal Competition (first prize), Fritz and Lavinia Jensen Foundation (second prize), the Cleveland Foundation (A. Grace Lee Mims Vocal Scholarship Award), and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (National Semifinalist, first place Great Lakes Region).

Kisma earned her bachelor of music from historically black college Kentucky State University, and master of music from Bowling Green State University - College of Musical Arts under Metropolitan Opera soprano Myra Merritt. She holds a postgraduate degree in voice from Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, and was a resident artist at the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
